The Richard lll Society

07 Feb

The discovery in September 2012 of human remains beneath a Leicester car park, and now confirmed as being those of Richard lll  has brought the Richard lll Society into the limelight.

As sponsors of the excavation, the Richard lll Society took something of a gamble but it was a calculated risk, based on the rigorous documentary research, paid for by the Richard lll Society, that took place before the archaeologists went anywhere near the site of the former Greyfriar’s Priory.

That is typical of the Richard lll Society ethos: solid academic research has always been the weapon that the society ruled by in their quest to find the facts about the life and times of Richard lll , and to counter the kind of speculation that puts Richard lll in the same category of evil murderers as Jack the Ripper or Lord Lucan .

The powerful grip that Richard lll’s reign (1483-1485) continues to have on our imagination, 500 years after his death,is the reason why the Society has several thousand members all over the world, a packed programme of talks, tours and social activities, study days and conferences, an annual journal and quarterly newsletter, as well as an educational and research programme funded by members.

Some powerful literary and historical works have contributed to our fascination with his reign: Shakespeare’s Richard lll portrays him as a villian in order to present Henry Vll as the founder of a legitimate new dynasty after the Battle of Bosworth; Horace Walpole’s Historic Doubts on the Life and Reign of King Richard the Third (1768) defends him against the accusation that he murdered the Princes in the Tower . Josephine Tey’s The Daughter of Time (195l dismisses the crimes attributed to him as improbable calumnies that would not stand up to Modern forensic examination.

Richard lll Society Chairman,Phil Stone, explains: We are not the Richard lll adoration Society. We are a Society of people who prefer that history should be based on.ascertained facts rather than on intuition and propaganda.
